Guernsey Fun Facts

– The first post box in the British Isles can be found on Union Street, St Peter Port and dates back to the reign of Queen Victoria.   It is still a working post box today.

– The Town Church is the closest church to a pub (the Albion House Tavern) in the British Isles.

– Guernsey is full of supernatural folklore including stories of Werewolves, Fairies and Witches.   Our famous red sunsets are said to have been coloured from the blood of battling pixies who invaded the Island to look upon its beautiful women.

– Our gorgeous, happy Guernsey Cows produce delicious milk, butter, cream and cheese.  We are delighted to use these Guernsey Dairy products in all of our baking and serve the fabulous Guernsey cream to accompany our scones and cakes.

– Traditionally, our local language of Guernsey Patois or Guernésiais is a mixture of Norman French and Norse English.  It is estimated that only 2% of Guernsey’s population can speak or understand the language.

– The Guernsey flag is made up of the red cross of St George and the golden Normandy Cross of William the Conqueror who became the King of England in 1066.   Even after the English lost control of Normandy, the Channel Islands remained with the English.

– Our car license plates are numbers only and can be black and silver, our post boxes are blue and our telephone boxes are yellow.
